JUST VC Holds Meeting with Journos to Discuss University’s Progress and Future Prospects
On Tuesday afternoon, Dr. Md. Abdul Majid, Vice-Chancellor of Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST), held a discussion with journalists in the conference room of the university’s administrative building. During the meeting, he urged the journalists to support the growth and advancement of the university, which he described as the result of local efforts and aspirations.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Majid paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in significant historical movements, from the 1952 Language Movement to the recent 2024 anti-discrimination student movement. He expressed gratitude toward the prominent local figures and public representatives who contributed to establishing and developing JUST.
In his address, Dr. Majid outlined ongoing and upcoming projects, including a 500 million BDT research development project aimed at enhancing laboratory facilities to foster hands-on knowledge and skill-building among students. Additionally, he shared plans to upgrade the Genome Center and CSRL. A new ‘Research Award’ initiative and various incentives are also being introduced to encourage research.
JUST has achieved recognition in the Times Higher Education ranking, where it was named a top university in Bangladesh for qualitative research. Dr. Majid emphasized that the university will prioritize teaching quality, research environment, and industry engagement to maintain and improve its ranking.
Highlighting future potential, he pointed out that greater Jashore is primarily an agricultural and fisheries-rich region, with JUST already operating a modern hatchery to support local fish farmers. To further support agriculture, JUST plans to introduce programs in agro-technology, agro-biotechnology, and nano-technology, along with new departments focused on artificial intelligence and data science.
Given JUST’s limited 35-acre campus area, Dr. Majid appealed to the government and relevant authorities for expansion to accommodate new residential halls, academic buildings, and athletic facilities, as the university transitions into a fully residential institution. He announced that a 10-story building would be constructed under an Asian Development Bank project to support these expansion goals.
JUST Deans Dr. H. M. Zakir Hossain, Dr. Md. Sirajul Islam, Dr. Shirin Nigar, Dr. Md. Jaforul Islam, Dr. Md. Manibur Rahman, Dr. Md. Korban Ali, Dr. Md. Kamal Hossain, Dr. Md. Ziaul Amin, and Registrar Mohammad Emdadul Haque, among others, attended the meeting. Journalists from various media shared questions and suggestions, which the JUST administration received positively, with plans to incorporate them into future strategies.
